It’s the first day of fall! So obviously my brain is starting to focus on the upcoming holiday season.

During the summer I went to The Big Toy Book’s Sweet Suite event in Manhattan, which is an annual party to connect bloggers (basically “mommy bloggers”) with companies and their products. This year it was part of a series of events called Blogger Bash, but I only attended Sweet Suite.

I went as press for GeekMom, since we’re working on our holiday gift guides. And there will be a lot of cool stuff for the holidays this year, ya’ll.

I’ve been busy over at GeekMom, and I have a few posts I’m really proud of. All of my posts are here, but in the past few weeks I did a roundup of the Best Audio Books for Family Road Trips, Disney’s 2013 Holiday Gift Preview, and HIT Entertainment’s 2013 Holiday Gift Preview. I also wrote I Took My 15-Month-Old to the Movies, analyzing whether or not H is ready for the big screen.

Yesterday I went and picked up my birthday present, a few days early:

Pennington Quilt Works was having a sale on their floor model and trade-in machines, and this Bernina QE440 was in perfect shape and super cheap (for a Bernina). I went and picked it up yesterday, and I’m in love with it. Getting this machine means no Creative Estates in April and no ALA conference in June, but it’s worth it to me. It really is such a great piece of engineering, and I finally get to work on a full size machine.

Steve Jobs got me good. I can’t get enough of this thing. I’m using an Apple photo of the iPad because I’m writing this post from mine, trying to figure out how to blog on it. And I’m in Philadelphia with a dead camera battery and limited resources, so…stock photo. If it posts, we’ll see if i actually got this to work.

Thanks to Sew Like A Man for posting about this, I’ve been looking for a tool that does precisely what this does: convert photos into quilt patterns.

On the heels of the big quilt exhibition at Victoria and Albert Museum in London (my mother-in-law sent me some fabulous clippings about it), the museum is now offering this Patchwork Pattern Maker on its website. I’ve been trying it out, and it is fantastic. You can decide if you want it to make an easy, medium, or hard quilt pattern, decide how many colors you want it to have, and it will tell you exactly how many squares you need in how many colors. You just have to scale the size of the squares to the size of the quilt you want to make. Not too bad at all.

I read on Heather Ross’s Journal that she built a custom Muppet for her husband as a gift. I’m now obsessed with that idea, so I’ve been playing on the site designing myself in Muppet form.

Part of the fun of the post-Christmas season is finally getting to post about things I made and gave to people as gifts. The secrets are (mostly) out of the bag now, so I can write about what I’ve been working on during my crafty marathon.

I just bought this book, and I’m really excited about it but also kind of terrified. I have still not been able to figure out how to make Sheldon. I’ve knit bags, scarves, hats, even iPod cozies. But I took one look at the directions for Sheldon and felt like I was trying to read a foreign language. I could not get my mind around it.

How cool is he? I just got my Sheldon Turtle & Costumes Kit from Knit Picks the other day with everything I need to make Original, Beach Bum, Pirate, Police Officer, Superhero, and Cowboy Sheldon. This is yet another knitting project to add to my pile, but I love him. I have no idea who to make him for, though. Maybe I’ll just make him for my desk.

I’m kind of becoming addicted to Etsy, so I think I’ll feature shops I like from time to time. These are shops I’m browsing right now.

I bought this Tree Stump Pin Cushion from Gracefell a few weeks ago. I love it and use it constantly, I was just too lazy to take my own picture of it and used the one from her shop. All her pin cushion designs are adorable.
