This blog turned 11 back on April 16th! I somehow always miss my blogiversary (does anyone still use that word?), and it’s also been a couple of months since I last posted. The week before this blog’s anniversary, we went back east to NJ to visit my mom for H’s spring break, and I got to spend a couple of nights on my own in NYC. The trip was fantastic for so many reasons. Adam gave me a ticket to finally see Hamilton for Christmas, and I just had the most amazing time. And it was great for H to revisit her hometown. She’d been missing NJ a lot, and lately starting to compare what she missed about NJ to what she had in WA. But she came back home to WA with a new appreciation for this new home we’re making in a way I don’t think she would have without a visit back to NJ. After 10 months away, she has changed so much, and I think she was able to enjoy the place where she was born but then get back to her new life out here.

I took a break from posting for a few days to finish a deadline. But last Saturday was our last day in Mystic, and we spent the morning at Olde Mistick Village for their Easter egg hunt. Which was such a great last thing to do before we left, if you’re ever in town for any of their family events I really recommend it. We packed up the car and brought Hamilton to their apple orchard with us, which he loved. He was a big hit with many of the little kids out there for the egg hunt, and he was just so excited for sunshine and adventure.

We really only spent two full days in Mystic, but on Good Friday we had a lazy morning at the hotel and then headed out with Hamilton in tow to grab lunch. We went to Sea View Snack Bar, right down the road from Mystic Seaport, and sat outside with him eating lobster rolls, french fries, and hot dogs. He had his very own hot dog, he was in his doggy glory.

Yesterday was our first of two full days in the Mystic area. I’ve been to Mystic as a kid, once or twice with Adam over the years, and once we spent an afternoon at the Seaport (with H) on our way to Maine with my in-laws. But every time I come I feel like it’s new, and my sense of geography is weird until we get somewhere, and I think, “Ah, I remember this.”

This week is H’s spring break, and so far it’s been pretty up and down. On Monday we booked a trip for H, Hamilton, and me to head to Mystic for the second half of the week. Spring break fun with me and the small ones! But then I woke up Tuesday with another sore throat, went to my doctor’s walk-in clinic, and confirmed that I had strep. Again. Second time in two weeks.

H and I hit the road this week for three nights in Lancaster county. We did this two years ago, and then again that same summer with my mom, and it was great. Last year we were in Las Vegas for spring break, but this year we didn’t have any plans. And H is a little older, we don’t need the stroller. She was much more into it this trip. We did a lot of fabric shopping for Mommy, but we also saw tons of trains and animals for her.

We just got back from a week in Vegas early yesterday morning. We’re all still very jet lagged, but I’m putting my photos together from the trip. I’m splitting them into a couple of posts just to spread them out a little.

A week in Las Vegas with a three-year-old is a very different animal than a week with just adults. The last time we were there was almost exactly 4 years ago, also on spring break, with my mother- and stepfather-in-law. This trip was very different, but so much fun.

The last stop on our week-long, whirlwind spring break road trip through New England was Vermont. We were only there for 1 night, and we stopped in Montpelier before heading up to Stowe to see how the other half lives.

After we left Boston and PAX East during our first weekend of spring break, we spent a day in Plymouth, MA before heading up to Portland for a few days. Plymouth was kind of a trip; we had a great lunch on the waterfront, saw Plymouth Rock in its cage, and went to Plimoth Plantation.

My first real, noteworthy lobster roll. I’ve had lobster rolls before, but not like this. OMG, I could’ve eaten three.

This has been a helluva month. I posted about the awesomeness surrounding H’s first birthday, but then I basically needed a break. I found out a couple days before her birthday that my district isn’t renewing my contract next year. I’m up for tenure at the end of the year, and…that’s the end of that. They don’t have to give a reason, but they did, and it was frankly more insulting than if they just hadn’t told me why. So that was a blow to the juggling act that has been returning to work after having this glorious little lady, and it all happened very fast, and I still had to try and pull off her birthday party despite being terribly distracted and frustrated. Then I spent the week between H’s birthday and spring break trying to finish Battle of the Books with my 4th graders and deal with my job posting going out and telling folks I will not be back.
