Today is my actual birthday, but last Sunday we went to see Elephant & Piggie: We Are in a Play at the New Victory Theater. That was my birthday celebration. My mom pointed out that they were doing a sensory friendly performance, I saw it was the weekend before my birthday, and that’s what I wanted. No presents.

I’ve learned recently just how many girls my age absolutely adore the movie Newsies. When I was a kid performing in community theater around northern NJ, I always sang “King of New York” when I auditioned, my theater friends and I were obsessed.

I had a great time in Manhattan on Sunday with Tracey, Meredith, and Laura Ann. We’ve been planning this outing since the spring, so I was thrilled when the day finally arrived.

My mom and I went to see Elf on Broadway on Friday, and it was fantastic! I really wasn’t sure how I’d feel about a musical version of the movie, and without Will Ferrell no less. But it was so much fun, we both left feeling the holiday spirit. The songs are not the most original or catchy show tunes ever (I couldn’t remember one note to sing to you), but the energy of the cast (especially Sebastian Arcelus as Buddy) was so through the roof that it made the show special. The dancing was fun, the cast was clearly having a blast, and it all helped put the show over the top even without a legendary score.

My mom and I have tickets for Black Friday, I’m so excited!! Elf, here we come.

I don’t think it’s a secret at this point that I freaking love Christmas. As far as I’m concerned, November 1st marked the official start of the holiday season. And I will live in an uncontrollable state of giddiness from now until December 26th.

One of our 3rd grade teachers puts on a play every year for Black History Month. This year she had decided not to do one, but her friend and choreographer is retiring from our school this year. So they decided to do a huge blowout show, a little later in the year than she would normally do. But what a show!

I’m exhausted. I spent Thursday and Friday home sick with some highly mysterious bug that just knocked me out for 2 days. I’m talking marathon sleeping interspersed with coughing and sniffling. Because of that I missed a Philly Modern Quilt Guild gathering on Friday night, which really is a bummer because it will probably be the end of April before I can make another one.

Reeve-Carney_lThey’ve cast the role of Spider-Man, and his name is Reeve Carney. This is hysterical to me because my maiden name is Carney.

Now I have to see this musical.

Yes, it is currently being cast for Broadway. Previews begin in February, and the show opens in March. Alan Cumming has signed on to play the Green Goblin, and Evan Rachel Wood is cast as Mary Jane. No one else has been cast yet. The music is by Bono and The Edge, and it’s directed by Julie Taymor (who made the oustanding Lion King show for Broadway and directed the awesome movie Across the Universe).
