You guys! I’m so excited about this, there is now a Jersey Shore Modern Quilt Guild. I’ve been driving all over the universe for the past few years trying to get involved with the Philly chapter (unsuccessfully, I haven’t been to a meeting in 2 years) and the NYC chapter (successfully). And now there’s one near my house. The first meeting was last Wednesday, and I was so thrilled to be able to go. I met some great ladies there, saw some beautiful quilts, even won a door prize.

Tomorrow is the next meeting of the NYC Mod Quilt Guild, and our challenge this month was 2 striped blocks, one 10.5″ squared and one 5.5″ by 10.5″. This is what I made:
Yesterday I was finally able to get to a meeting of the Philly Modern Quilt Guild. I’ve missed the 1st two, so I definitely didn’t want to miss this one. Especially after I made my House in the Night pillow for the occasion. It was great to put some faces to the blogs I read and hang out with these very cool ladies. And I got tons of inspiration from the pillow theme. Forgive the terrible pictures, I didn’t have my regular camera with me.
For ages I’ve wanted to start making quilts and patchwork projects inspired by my favorite children’s book illustrations without overtly using prints from children’s books, like the Eric Carle collections. A couple of months ago I bought a set of Michael Miller’s Gray Citron and Plane Jane Gray fat quarters because the colors so reminded me of one of my favorite books of 2008, The House in the Night. I talk about this book a lot, and I use it with my students every chance I get. I love the poetry, I love the images. It’s one of those books I can read over and over again and constantly be soothed by, very much the way Goodnight Moon was my constant go-to source of comfort as a child. This has become like my modern Goodnight Moon.
