If you head over to my quilting and sewing Instagram, @orangeroomquilts, you’ll see that I’m running a giveaway through this Saturday, January 28th at midnight. I just rearranged my studio this month, and I have a huge pile of fabrics that I pulled from my stash and decided not to keep. So, I’m packing up a large USPS flat rate box and giving it away as a prize!

I finally finished this quilt! It’s a horribly belated first birthday present, but I love this quilt to pieces. I hope H loves it, too.

It’s been more than a month since I’ve sewn anything, but last week I finally started getting back to myself around here. And I made the backing for the Dr. Seuss quilt. And took really terrible photos of it, this was the best in the bunch. I will post better photos next time I have a chance to lay this out in good lighting, I promise.

bee square goodiesSo I completely forgot to mention that I got a bag of goodies last week from Bee Square Fabrics for participating in the Dr. Seuss Quilt Competition. This assortment of fabric pieces came as a consolation prize, and I love it. I’m already trying to think of what to use the fabrics for, and there are some projects on my list that might make great use of these. So I’m thrilled that my first foray into the world of quilting competition was so much fun, and I placed third!

Vote for my quilt, I’m number 8! The survey is working now. Based on the comments the popular vote seems to be going to the easily identifiable Dr. Seuss themes, so I’m taking the underdog stance. This is fun!

I suddenly have so many things exciting me this week that I can hardly stop bouncing to post about them.

First of all, Adam’s passport came yesterday! I’ve mentioned us wanting to go away for spring break next week, but our excitement had sort of fizzled after we realized Adam’s passport had expired in February. I was already getting a little overwhelmed with all the planning before we realized about his passport, and then I just couldn’t get motivated to rethink the plan. But it has arrived, and today Adam took charge of the planning and found some great last-minute deals to Cancun. I booked the tickets this evening with some travel vouchers my mom donated to the cause (thanks, Mom!). Honestly, if Adam had just booked a trip and told me where we were going, I would have been ecstatic. Spring break fever has hit school hard, and testing season has begun. I’ve had so much else taking up my head space in March that I couldn’t get this vacation going. But Cancun it is!

It’s done! And I love it.

I got Adam to take the pictures because clearly his camera is better than mine, and I wanted these photos to look different from my usual standing-over-project pose that makes it look like a narrowing hallway towards the top. So the whole thing is based roughly on the Any Way You Slice It quilt from Denyse Schmidt Quilts. I didn’t use a pattern, though, and I only made one kind of square. The finished size is roughly 6″ x 7″ and Adam has commented that it will make an exciting hot plate after this competition is done.

The quilt top is done for Bee Square’s Dr. Seuss quilt contest. I haven’t been able to concentrate on sewing much the past week or so, so it’s taken me a while to get this sewn together. I also couldn’t decide if this would be the final layout, and I played with a lot of different options. In the end I decided that this is the one I liked the best.

Here are my squares, pieced and ready to be pieced together. I think this is the final layout, but I might end up changing it again. It is a very abstract approach to Bee Square’s project, but I like it. Even if it doesn’t make the final round of voting, I think the colors and patterns and lines are Seussian in all the best ways. I like it, and I like having a project where I force myself to think outside the box.
