I wrote a post for GeekMom over the weekend about the launch of Phillip Lim’s collaboration with Target. Then bright and early Sunday morning, H and I ventured out to Target for the 8am opening.

There were about a dozen people in line for the opening, and by the time I got H into a cart and over to the clothes women (and a few men) were just picking the racks clean of everything. But, we did manage to get some great goodies into our cart.

Tomorrow is the first day of school, and I was stressed out about finding a new school bag. The Lands’ End argyle affairs I’ve been carrying my entire teaching career no longer exist, so obviously I started spiraling.

I bought the pattern for Amy Butler’s Weekender bag ages ago and then realized we would have to take out a 2nd mortgage on the house to pay for the materials to make it. Heavyweight home decor fabric is NOT cheap, and this pattern also uses tons of interfacing and heavyweight stabilizer (pretty inexpensive, but 5 yds of that stuff adds up fast). I saw really gorgeous fabrics that I loved, but they were anywhere from $15-$19/yd. Since the bag says it requires nearly 5 yds. of fabric (not including all the other materials), this was just not worth it. I could buy a bag for less, and for me that takes the fun out of making something.

Years ago my friend Kathy got me addicted to the amazing H bags from Brooklyn Industries. These canvas giants seriously hold everything you could possibly shove in them without ever feeling impossibly heavy, and I’m about to wear out my second large one. So while looking for a new one to treat myself to this fall, I saw this Typewriter sweater. I want it. I have to have it. It is the ultimate in librarian fashion.
