circle quilt 1I’m finally starting the circle quilt. It took me 4 tries to find the right background fabric. The first I thought of using was the 2nd from the left in the bottom row of this picture. But it was too busy on our dining room walls. Then I thought about using solid chocolate brown, then a retro big floral print. Today I drove down to Mouse Creek Quilts and found this Purl “Cake Rock Beach” fabric with brown on brown dots.

The quilting is done! Now I have to square it up and bind it. I used a blueish/almost teal colored Gutermann thread for the quilting, and I’m happy with it. I almost quilted with orange thread, but there’s already a great deal of orange in this, and I wanted to bring out the blue/green more.

I got the backing fabric and batting cut, and I made my quilt sandwich, drew my grid lines, and pinned up the whole thing. Now I just need to quilt it, trim it, and bind it. I was hoping to finish it this weekend, but since I painted the bathroom I didn’t really get the chance. But it shouldn’t be much longer until it’s done!

I just realized this didn’t get posted, I thought I scheduled it to go for this morning. So I finally finished blindstitching all the patches onto this table runner last week, the hand sewing part is done. But I’m using the table runner for a little visual experiment. The LCD on my camera died in Cancun, and I’ve been using Adam’s little point and shoot for the past month. It’s perfectly useable, but it’s not ideal. Adam also has 2 fairly serious Canon SLRs complete with several lenses, and I’m basically trying to figure out what I’m looking for in a camera. My camera still takes pictures, but I cannot see what I’m taking pictures of (both the screen and the viewfinder are LCD and shot). So I’m going to compare the quality of photos on all 3 cameras to try and decide what to do next.

picking the background fabricOther posts on this project: Table Runner Pt. 1, Table Runner Pt. 2.

So lots of changes to this project over the past few days. First of all, I went to the fabric store to get some more solid brown fabric for the back. I ended up buying an even darker brown than the 2 I was originally choosing between. And I love it, the patches stand out perfectly against it. The Christmas Runner uses the middle brown, the only thing is that the brown I chose is close to the color of our dining room table. I’ll have to pick a good binding color to separate the two so the runner doesn’t disappear on the table.

I don’t know why it feels like I got the patches for this table runner made in record speed. They whipped right up, and now I’m ready to lay them out and fuse them to the background fabric. Then comes long evenings blindstitching them while I watch TV or something. That’s the worst part, all that hand stitching takes forever. But it’s incredibly satisfying, and it’s nice to have a sewing project that’s portable.

I tied for 3rd place in the Bee Square Fabrics Dr. Seuss quilt contest. Yay!

The first new project I’m starting this spring is another table runner like the Christmas Runner. I liked it so much, and it was such a great project for practicing applique and hand sewing that I decided to make a year-round runner to leave on our dining room table. This project of course came from the supremely inspiring Purl Bee, and it was originally conceived as a Thanksgiving Runner. The benefit of having made one already is that I already know measurements and difficulty, and now I can tweak to make it better.

Done!

I finished this runner, and I think it’s great. Yes, the back is completely terrifying, but it’s all a learning curve. The front looks fluffy and evenly quilted, the binding looks good, and new tagsI even used one of my new tags from Bella Mental. It’s a table runner, so no one has to know about the back but us (shhh!). And now I have a better idea of what I need to watch out for the next time I quilt something with batting this thick. Time to pack this up with the other holiday decorations.

Yes, I’m very late to this party. I started this runner before the holidays, but I made so many other things that I didn’t have time to finish this. In my quest to end Crafter’s Block I picked this up again. It gives me tons of time to finish this for next Christmas.
