I’ve started a new quilt to give as a gift next month, using a jelly roll I’ve had in my stash for a while of Kate & Birdie’s Story Book collection for Moda.

Last week I asked for help deciding between a super simple Paddington Bear quilt and a more elaborate patchwork quilt for my very pregnant friend. Paddington was the favorite, I even got texts rooting for him. But I was still on the fence about such a simple quilt for a good friend, and then said friend’s water broke last night. And I hadn’t made her anything yet. So it was definitely time to rub some speed on this project. Babies don’t wait for my creative inspiration to strike, apparently.

I have finished the quilting on this one, now I just need to snip threads and bind it. This is the first time I’ve played with the Bernina Stitch Regulator, and I love it. Took a while to get a groove going, but once I did it was great. I just did a meandering quilt pattern all over in chocolate brown thread.

Finally, this quilt top is finished! I had to put this aside for about a month while work and home life got insanely busy. This baby will be walking by the time I get this quilt finished, but I’m getting back into it. I’ve finally pieced this in a way I’m happy with, I think the finished quilt be great.

One of the teachers at school just had a baby boy. I was trying to get this quilt finished for her in time for her shower a few weeks ago, but I ended up being home several days the week of the party. So I decided to give myself until this past Friday, her last day before maternity leave, to finish it and give it to her. Then she went into labor and had the baby on Monday night. So now, I’m just trying to finish it and mail it to her.

This has not been a great week. Layoffs happened. I received my contract renewal letter for next year, which should be great news. But there is still a possibility of more cuts to come, so I can’t rest easy yet. Probably can’t rest easy until September 1st, when the next school year starts. But I’m trying to put it out of my mind. And we lost 2 teachers in my building. One of them is my most favorite teacher on earth, and I’m devastated about it. Literally, I’ve bawled more than once since I heard the news. She is one of those teachers made out of magic, who takes tough kids and turns them into children with self-respect and success. I want to be her when I grow up. Now she’s going, and I still have no idea what will happen to me between now and September.

shayne's blanketTime for another blanket!

One of our 1st grade teachers at school had a baby last spring. She had to go on maternity leave early and we didn’t get to throw her a shower. So this week, we did. I made her little girl Shayne this baby blanket, using my “Mary Had a Little Lamb” fabric.

indiablanketMy baby cousin, India, is having a baby next month. She’s 22, so I can’t really call her my baby cousin anymore. But I remember that she was the first baby I ever held, when I was 7-going-on-8. So I wanted to make her a fun blanket for the baby boy she’s expecting. Her shower isn’t until the end of February, but this is already made and ready to go. It’s just like Alannah’s Blanket, Yvonne’s Blanket, and the Little Red Riding Hood Blanket, but I’ve been playing with the original quilt design from Last-Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts. I tried to follow the lines of the car fabric with this one, and the next one I make I’ll play with different quilting altogether. The blanket itself is a really basic idea, so I’ll try playing with pattern and stitching to make them fun.

One of my coworkers is expecting her first grandchild any day now. I decided to make another Super Quick +Easy Baby Quilt from Last-Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts by Joelle Hoverson, like Alannah’s Blanket. It’s a boy, but since I don’t know the baby’s name I’m calling this Yvonne’s Blanket (she’s the grandma). I found this cute teddy bears in wagons fabric and decided to use that for the front.
