I’m so excited, all the 2nd grade classes are now done with The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. We’re finishing up book reviews of it this week. I wrote 3 sentences on the board and asked the kids to fill in their opinions, good or bad, of the book. They had some great thoughts about it, I was so impressed! I used to take it personally when students didn’t like a book we read in class together, but then I remembered that I don’t like every book I’ve read, either. Especially those I read in school, so why should I expect them to be any different? The point for me is that they really think it through, I don’t want them to just tell me it was good or bad. And they totally get it.

WARNING: SPOILERS to follow for the book, if you haven’t read it already and want to stop now!

kids with lettersI’ve mentioned (many times to anyone who’s been near me in person lately) that Kate DiCamillo signed a copy of The Tale of Despereaux at BEA09 for my students and me. I decided it would be great to have the kids write letters to Ms. DiCamillo telling her their favorite part of the book.

Yesterday I said I was a bad children’s librarian because children’s books weren’t interesting me. That’s not entirely true, actually.

I’ve been really into Kate DiCamillo’s books this summer. I started with The Tale of Despereaux, then recently I read The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane and Because of Winn-Dixie. All of these stories are so different and still so well done. I was most surprised by how much I liked Because of Winn-Dixie. As I’ve mentioned before, as someone who’s never had a dog I’m never drawn to stories of dogs bringing people together. But I really enjoyed it, and I thought it was a wonderful story for middle readers. Her stuff is great, I’m glad I finally read these.
