We had a wonderful Thanksgiving at our house this year. My family came over, there was turkey, I threw butternut squash in the stuffing, and I made an all-day bone broth with the turkey once the leftovers were eaten.

I love this time between Halloween and the full sprint of the Christmas season. It’s not quite time yet to scramble for presents and decorate everything in site. It’s cozy, November is pure fall weather, and the leaves are still bright and everywhere on the ground. But I feel crafty, and I’m in the mood to be out trekking around the neighborhood, and the woods nearby. I had a batch of leaves ready to go, so when my nephew came over last week for a playdate after school I decided to make some turkeys.

Today was Balloon Day, and even though last year I vowed not to go back until H was sturdy enough to do the whole thing without a stroller, and on mass transit, I did not stick to that plan. I love it too much.

Happy happy happy! I loved Thanksgiving this year, even with a few challenges. Great new recipes, and lots of great family time. Even a new tradition with the kids.

The challenge came from our trip to see the Macy’s balloons inflated. We skipped last year because of an impending ice storm, and I thought we’d actually gone the year before. We didn’t, I have no idea why. So H’s had one trip, as a wee little baby. And maybe I’m remembering the challenges that kept us away after the fact. The crowds, the trip into the city on the busiest travel day, having the stroller.

Last year in early November, with the very last remnants of my spoils from apple season, I made this fantastic jam for Thanksgiving. I gave jars of it to H’s teachers at school the day before Thanksgiving break last year (but not this year, she was out sick with an ear infection the whole week). We served it at the table for the big feast. We served the last jar of it last week for Thanksgiving, and I still forgot to take photos of the jarred goodness instead of the giant pot of hot goop.
