Other Kauai posts: Kauai.

Quilting is pretty big in Hawaii! Kauai is tiny, like drive from one end to the other in about an hour tiny, and I found 2 quilt shops and a museum exhibit. Hawaiian quilting is very cool, needle turned applique with solid colors. So the stores sell tons of patterns for Hawaiian quilts, plus some other great treasures.

Kapaia Stitchery doesn’t have a website, but it’s on Kuhio Highway in Lihue. The ladies who own this shop were sweet, and it had a lot of great Hawaiian florals. They don’t stock many modern prints, but that’s not really the point of a quilt shop in Hawaii. I’m not into batiks, but they had loads. And I got a great pattern for a postcard quilt using those famous great big floral prints.

Vicky’s Fabric and Notions in Kapaa was a lot of fun. It is packed to the gills with fabric, so you have to spend some time there digging through things. I went back twice and found great stuff both times, including fun hula girl fabrics. And they have some more modern stuff, which would be great if this was my neighborhood shop. But I like to at least try to get regional fabrics on vacation. Operative word there is try.

I can’t wait to sort out all these fabrics and plan out a new project with them.
